We want
to be as kind to the environment as possible. One important step on this
road is looking after all our waste products. So it’s good news that cows
like orange peel.
Because we squeeze roughly 350 tonnes of
fruit every week, we’re left with quite a lot of fruit peel. (In round
figures about 175 tonnes).
To avoid adding even more to the refuse
mountain, more than 95 per cent of this fruit peel goes to neighbouring
farmers who use it to feed their animals. (In citrus-producing countries it
is a very common animal fodder. In fact orange peel is actually a favourite
of cows!). The remaining peel is used as a soil conditioner.
We make sure that our fruit growers comply
with European food legislation. We also conduct regular tests on the juice
and the fruit peel.
All our packaging should be recycled. We use environmentally friendly grades of paper and plastic that can be recycled or used for energy production. We also try to co-ordinate deliveries and transport fruit and juice in the most environmentally friendly way, to minimise carbon dioxide emissions.
